Before & After Gallery - Hearthstone Chimney Co.

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Chimney Cleaning Before & After in Ashburn, VA

We’ve been sweeping chimneys in Ashburn since 1984. After 42 years, we’ve learned that homeowners don’t need more sales talk - they need to see what a proper cleaning actually looks like. The photos below show real conditions we’ve found in Loudoun County homes, and what they looked like after we finished. No staging, no filters. Just the work, done right.

Heavy Creosote Buildup - Ashburn Farm

Chimney flue cleaning: glazed creosote removal in Ashburn Farm

The homeowner in Ashburn Farm smelled something acrid every time they ran their wood stove. Our Level-2 camera inspection showed Stage 3 glazed creosote a quarter-inch thick, hardened by repeated partial burns. We used mechanical brushing and professional-grade creosote modifier to break it down, then ran the camera again so they could see bare stainless steel from top to bottom. The smell stopped that evening. Done right - and we stand behind it.

Blocked Flue From Bird Nesting - Brambleton

Bird nest removal and chimney cap installation in Brambleton

A family in Brambleton called in March because their fireplace was smoking back into the living room. We found a partially collapsed chimney swift nest blocking the flue, along with years of accumulated twigs and debris. We removed the obstruction, swept the flue, and installed a Gelco stainless steel cap with proper mesh screening. No more smoke, no more tenants. Photos you can see, a plain-English verdict.

Deteriorated Clay Liner - One Loudoun Area

Before and after HeatShield cerfractory flue sealant application showing spalled clay liner restored
Clay liner restoration with HeatShield near One Loudoun

The inspection on this 1987 build near One Loudoun revealed spalling clay liner tiles and exposed mortar joints - a carbon monoxide risk every time the furnace cycled. Rather than pushing a full liner replacement, we applied HeatShield cerfractory sealant to restore the flue’s integrity. The camera footage afterward showed a smooth, continuous surface rated to 2900°F. We’ll be there when we say, and we’ll tell you straight when work can wait and when it can’t.

Smoke Chamber Corrosion - Ashburn Village

Before and after smoke chamber parging showing rough corbelled brick smoothed with refractory mortar
Smoke chamber parging in Ashburn Village

The corbelled brick in this Ashburn Village smoke chamber was so rough and eroded that smoke was pooling instead of drafting upward. It’s a common issue in homes built during the 1990s development boom. We parged the chamber with refractory mortar to create the smooth, sloping surface the code requires. Draft improved immediately. Most jobs completed in a single visit - this one was no exception.

Water-Damaged Firebox - Loudoun Valley Estates

Before and after firebox brick replacement showing deteriorated refractory panels restored
Firebox refractory panel replacement in Loudoun Valley Estates

Years of minor chimney leaks had rotted the metal firebox frame and cracked the refractory panels in this Loudoun Valley Estates home. The homeowner assumed they’d need a full fireplace replacement. We replaced the damaged panels with Olympia Chimney refractory components, sealed the source of the water intrusion at the crown, and showed them the camera footage proving the flue itself was sound. A square deal: no surprises on the bill, and no selling them work they didn’t need.

Neglected Prefab System - University Center

Before and after factory-built chimney cleaning showing packed ash and soot removed from metal chimney system
Factory-built chimney system cleaning near University Center

This prefab metal chimney near University Center hadn’t been serviced in eleven years. The chase cover had rusted through, and the interior was packed with ash and deteriorated insulation. We swept the system, replaced the chase cover with a custom-fabricated copper-top unit from Copperfield, and verified proper clearances to combustibles. The manufacturer’s specifications are specific for a reason - we don’t guess. In writing, no arguing.

What Every Ashburn Homeowner Should Check

Not every chimney needs dramatic repair. But every chimney in Ashburn needs regular attention, and here’s why: our freeze-thaw cycles from November through March accelerate masonry deterioration. The clay soil in Loudoun County shifts. And the oak and hickory most of us burn here produces more creosote than the softwoods common in other regions.

If you haven’t had a Level-2 inspection with camera documentation in the past two years, you’re flying blind. A visual check from the hearth tells you almost nothing about the flue’s actual condition.

How We Document Our Work

Every cleaning and inspection we perform in Ashburn follows the same protocol Russell Haines established back in 1984:

  • Interior and exterior condition assessment
  • Level-2 camera inspection with photo documentation
  • Written condition report with plain-English explanation
  • Cleaning performed with professional-grade equipment
  • Post-service camera verification where applicable
  • 90-Day Done Right Promise on all work

We don’t hand you a checklist and hope you trust us. We show you what we found, explain what it means, and let you decide. That’s the Keystone Standard - Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it.
